Frequently asked Food Queries
Can I eat Cadbury’s chocolate?
Cadbury’s and now also Green & Blacks provided us with the following statement:
*Cross contact = The levels of gluten will be no more than 100mg per kg. These products are produced on a line which handles gluten containing ingredients.
As we deal exclusively with products under 20ppm, we will no longer be listing the range in the Food List.
A product listed in the Food List lists Barley as an ingredient, is this safe to eat?
Since the new allergen legislation has been brought in all ingredients must be listed. Barley can be in a product as an ingredient but when mixed with all ingredients and tested it will come in under 20ppm which is gluten free.
Are Mars bars safe for coeliacs?
Mars incorporated have lots of brands, listed here www.mars.com/uk/en/brands although some of these products may not contain any gluten containing ingredients they are manufactured on a line were gluten has been present therefore they are not safe for coeliacs.
Does Tea Bag glue, Envelope gum, Toothpaste or Cosmetics contain gluten?
Gluten has to be ingested into the intestine to cause problems. It cannot be absorbed through the skin. If a lipstick, lip balm, or face cream contained any gluten it is unlikely that you would swallow enough to cause any reaction. Remember you might still find you’re sensitive to some cosmetics but this is not because of coeliac disease.
Can I give my coeliac child Calpol?
Regarding the CALPOL range – our food manager was informed that in the some of the Calpol products will utilize starch derived from either wheat/maize and their product analysis of the final gluten content would be batch specific. Even though processing of the starch could render it to be less than 20ppm, they cannot provide a guarantee that the products have not been further cross contaminated.
So, in short, unfortunately due to ingredients and possible contamination risks, Calpol is not certified GF and therefore not suitable for Coeliacs.
