Just to let you know in advance of publication of the Food List 2020 it will be somewhat thinner than in previous years. The reason for this is that we will not be including products that are naturally gluten free from each retailer in the Republic of Ireland.
In relation to the main Supermarkets, I would personally like to thank all of the Retailers (Aldi, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, SuperValu and Tesco) for all their hard work again this year in working with us on this annual project. Having worked in the Food Industry for over 25 years, I appreciate the time and effort that is involved in completing a task such as this. Through the process, we have built good working relationships with the key contacts and this is very helpful to us and for our members going forward.
As the Coeliac Society’s food management team is so small, in an effort to use all resources available to us as efficiently as possible, we have moved to a self-certification system for the Retailers. What this means is that the key contact within each Retailer is responsible for compiling the list of gluten free products that they wish to have in our annual Food List. It is their responsibility to complete the due diligence to their satisfaction including collection of gluten free test certificates and production facility risk assessments, where applicable, from their suppliers.
The responsibility for the list of gluten free products they submit is therefore with each individual Retailer. In order for this list of products to appear in our annual Food List they must sign a declaration stating that they have completed the necessary due diligence and are happy to stand over the list of gluten free products that they have provided to us. On receipt of that signed declaration we will then include that Retailer’s gluten free food list in our Food List 2020.
In addition, products that are labelled with a “May Contain Gluten” statement are not included in the Food List 2020. We have also advised our Retail partners that they should not include on their lists any products with a “May Contain Gluten” statement. We have done our best to ensure no products bearing this statement have been included, but should you find otherwise we would advise that you take that up directly with the Retailer/Brand/Manufacturer.
Whilst every effort has been made to produce an accurate Food list, we always advise our members that it is always best to check the labels and if in doubt follow up with the manufacturer to ensure an informed decision is made.
I hope that you find the Food list 2020 useful and to our many contributors thank you once again, as without your dedication and commitment this project would not be possible.
