Flahavan's Irish porridge oats

Postby LGA » Thu Jan 29, 2009 11:26 am

Are Flahavan's Irish porridge oats (500g pack) suitable for a coeliac who can eat uncontaminated oats?

The ingredients are 'Wholegrain rolled oats'.

I have sent email to Flahavan's but as yet no reply.

Legislation on Oats in the Codex Standard and Labelling:

These oats that the standard refer to are not available in Ireland, they are PURE OATS not commercial oats e.g. commercial - Flavavans or Odlums are NOT suitable for coeliacs, all commercial oats and oats on sale in health shops in Ireland are contaminated. We are giving you the legislation on oats as per the Codex Standard.

I am sure that manufacturers of pure oats will bring these products onto the Irish market at some stage but please note that oats (avenin) agree with some coeliacs - not all coeliacs, scientific studies are ongoing on the whole issue of oats as part of a gluten free diet.

Thanks, Coeliac, rather disappointing that these are unsuitable.
