Bad and Good in Clonakilty

Postby Genie » Sat Jun 02, 2012 11:42 pm

I was in Clonakilty on Friday 1st June and had the bad and good experiences we get as Coeliacs. We stayed in the Quality Hotel and returned there having previously enjoyed the experience. Once again it was a pleasure especially at breakfast this morning.. When i informed the staff member that i was a coeliac she offered me the option of sausage and pudding which would take a little longer as it would be cooked seperately.. I received four Clonakilty sausages with one large slice of black and also white pudding, and toast. No extra cost i might add.
Last evening we decided to eat in town as there are many restarants of quality there. We did the usual strolling about and reading the menus whiich are on most wiindows. We decided on one "The Sugan"
for its range of fish dishes, and left there a few minutes later quite disappointed and angry. Thiis resaurant comes recommended and has many plaques on display externally from Campells and others. We were shown to our table and the place was busy. I immediately informed the waitress as i try to give people an early opportunity to check out the chef or kitchen. She told me that all their sauces had flour in them and as they were busy they would not make a sauce for me. She recommended steak and i told her that i had come to her restaurant due to the variety of fish, Tough, she told me i could have hake without sauce. I thanked her and left.
We crossed the street to "Richys". Different world 15 seconds apart. They were also busy and that is the only common feature. I had Chowder with homemade bread, their own, for starter and Scallops with a light cream sauce for main and also desert. The menu was clearly marked with CF and N for nut allergy sufferers if they were an ingredient. I had seen the menu previously but had gone for the place with the wider range. Fool was i. That is my rant and to finish it i think that maybe the people who visit these establishments to give out awards should employ a few allergy sufferers and get a real
idea of what is going in their food.
