Skin rash
I have been following a low carb diet for the best part of two years I recently stopped smoking and started eating bread again and drinking quite alot of beer
.Since i started eating bread aggain I have developed an itchy rash on both my shins that has'nt cleared up at all. I withdrew most gluten from my diet for one week and noticed some improvement however I had a communion yesterday and eat bread and drank beer and I awoke this morning with hives on my groin area stomach and inner arms.Could i be coeliac or gluten intolerant? If so what are the next steps i should take. Also the pharmacist prescribed aveeno skin relief moisturiser for the rash which i apllied today but since i applied it the sores have been weeping is this product suitable?
Re: Skin rash
Hi Valfoleyrose and congrats on being so aware.
Is http://www.coeliac.ie/coeliac_disease/d ... petiformis any help ?
If I were you I'd head post haste to GP & not stop the gluten.
( If (s)he says its 'nothing' / 'remind me of this the next time you are in'/ <some other dismissive remark> then hunt down a better GP )
Best of luck

Re: Skin rash
Hi!
Yes sounds like it could be dermatitis which is a symptom of coeliac disease.
I completely agree with Olddog remain on your normal diet and ask your GP for a bloodtest and a referral for a biopsy (the bioposy is essential).
If you withdraw gluten from your diet beforehand it may not be picked up as the inflamation/damage to the lining of your gut will naturally die down if gluten isnt present.
It isnt easy being a coeliac at first but my reassurance to you is that if you are, you will start to feel tons better, that loads of energy and the dermatistis will improve straight away and eventually go away.

Re: Skin rash
Just an aside about Aveeno. This contains oats and, if you are a coeliac, it would be very easy for this to be transferred via the hands to the mouth. A good emollient to use is diprobase. Dermatologists recommend it and it is available over the counter at the chemist.

Re: Skin rash
Hi guys thanks for all your advice have booked an appointment with my gp tomorrow morning and have continued with a normal diet despite the fact that it is obviously aggrivating the rash had some bread and savoury rice today and am itching like crazy
hopefully the gp wont dismiss it doubtful though as both my shins are absolutely raw since reintroducing gluten.I'm sure I'll need plenty more advice if it turns out that i am in fact coeliac or gluten intolerant will let you know how it goes thanks again
Re: Skin rash
Something is in the back of my mind that the CD blood test usually is no good for DH...( but I cant point you to a reference on this just now )
With regard to DH diagnosis http://www.merckmanuals.com/professiona ... ormis.html Suggests its by skin biopsy at the area concerned
Good Luck tomorrow

Re: Skin rash
hi guys went to my gp today he says it looks like dermatitis on my shins and urcitaria everywhere else!
so he took blood and said it should show up if i am coeliac gluten or wheat intolerant but he won't have results till early next week he has also prescribed steroid cream for the dermatitis and antihistamines for urcitaria .I will have to stop the gluten now though as i am having serious allergic reactions have urcitaria all over my body and my ankles and legs have swelled to double there normal size

Re: Skin rash
Oh you poor thing that sounds absolutely awful!!
The only thing i would say is that the blood test may suggest you are not a coeliac when you actually are. The results of the blood test will decide a lot for you however. If you are not convinced and depending where you are based in Ireland, i would do a bit of research regarding a specialist (ask family and friends) and when next with your doctor ask for a letter of referral to this doctor for a biopsy prehaps.
I feel for you, i used get dermatitis on my back but nothing as severe as what you have described!!
Also, remember what Jess said to re Aveeno, prehaps you have an allergy to this also. So keep the body oitments as simple as poss.

Re: Skin rash
Agree with what Gookie has said. Blood test alone is not conclusive, so try and stay on gluten and push for biopsies. When you have finished your prescription creams, it is very important to keep your skin well moisturised. Diprobase or Silcox base are non allergic and do the job very well and can also be used instead of soap. I speak from experience because, as a family, we are all plagued with excema and dermatitis.
Re: Skin rash
Hey All,
I thought and was told somewhere along the line that using Aveeno is ok because it is not ingested?
Val I have severe urticaria which is thankfully well controlled now with antihistamines. Sometimes it can be a bit of a trial to find the right one and the correct dose. At present I am on a very high dose of antihistamines and my skin is pretty clear.
A tip I got is to buy Aqueous cream and keep it in the fridge. Instead of itching it apply the cream and it does give relief. Sometimes itching can cause bruising too.
My bloods were always negative for Coeliac Disease.
Hope you feel better really soon.

Re: Skin rash
Aveeno is not ingested but it is difficult to get off the hands which then handle whatever goes into the mouth so it is better to steer clear, in my opinion. Just the fact that it is on the hands. Wouldn't be bothered about other products though. Diprobase and Silcox Base are aqueous creams recommended by dermatologists.
Re: Skin rash
Thats true too Jess. Never really thought of that. I use the cleanser applying it with cotton wool and moisturiser for face. Will have to hunt for a suitable one so.
What other products were you talking about?

Re: Skin rash
I don't panic about make up etc. (which is what I meant by other products), but I just feel that moisturiser is such a difficult product to remove all traces from hands! Better to err on the side of caution.

Re: Skin rash
Hi grace just wondering what antihistamines you are using gp prescribed teflat 180mg took one yesterday and one today and although the swelling and urcitaria rash has died down a little its still very much there!I didn't have any gluten today think I might abstain at least until my bloods are back have completely bloated out all over after 3 days eating it and you wouldn't believe the break out of urcitaria and swelling find it unbelievable that I can be suddenely so allergic to foods that i have eaten for most of my life. And haven't used anymore of the aveeno applied the steroid cream last nite and noticed improvement in the dermatitis and it wasn't so itchy today thank god
will suggest a biopsy to my gp depending on what he says about the bloods although I'm afraid i do suffer with white coat syndrome too!!!
and can be sqeamish at the best of times what does it entail does it hurt? Also my father is actually currently in hospital with ulcerative collitis have heard there can be a herederity link between the two:?:
