Venice
My daughter is travelling to Venice in a few weeks with a college group. Does anyone know restaurants (at the cheaper end ) who cater for coeliacs. I know Italy generally is very good but am told that as Venice caters more for tourists there are not so many choices. I imagine the students will head for fast and cheap food joints so the name of a pizzeria would be wonderful
Hi Jo,
There's only one restaurant listed on the Italian Coeliac Society's website for Venice which is "da Poggi" (details below). When I was there I didn't eat here in the end because there was nothing vegetarian as well as gluten-free on the menu (it's mainly fish based).
The Italians are very accomodating to the diet though and if you show your eating out card they're usually happy to prepare a risotto or something gluten-free. There's also a great selection of gluten-free items (including beer) available in the supermarkets.
All the best,
Orla

You can put the link into Google Translate and it will help you navigate the site.

Hi Jo,
Oh and I forgot to mention there's a Grom Gelateria on Campo San Barnaba, 30123 Venezia. They have all of their items clearly marked gluten-free on the menu and know to use a separate scoop when you say you're "senza glutine".
