Advise - what to do after being 'glutened'

Postby Bine » Thu Dec 22, 2005 11:04 am

Hi all,

I'm new here and you probably dicussed this quite often, but I was wondering what others experience as I feel quite lonely with my 'condition' most of the time. I am on the diet for the last five years.
It's Xmas time and inevitable all the Xmas lunches come along. I find that most restaurants in Dublin try to accommodate you the best they can, but it goes wrong often enough. Yesterday for exaple I went to a Xmas lunch with my work crowd. I had phoned the place in advance, discussed the menu with the waitress when ordering and got reassured that what they had pointed out as the gluten free option would be ok for me. It wasn't, I had to leave earlier while the others went to the pub afterwards. I had the most terrible evening/night in a lang time and I still feel awful
Sometimes I feel that even eating gluten free after being glutened, is still unsettling. I had plans to go out for a meal with my boyfriend tonight, but I don't dare to as I am afraid my evening will get ruined again by feeling sick...
What do you guys do to ease the symptoms? How long does it take you to recover and what do you eat as long as you still feel unsettled?

I find that eating something with fresh ginger in it helps alot. Or if you're really in a bad way, make ginger tea by choping up pieces of ginger pouring boiling water on it and adding a spoonful of sugar to it.
(It also doubles as a good hangover cure ;-) ).
Hope that's of some help,
Orla

i personally find that eating gf does the trick. But please keep reading this site as there is so much advice and so many restaurants and hotels where other coeliacs have not been glutened. dublin strikes me as being very good. I love to go up when I have to as i try some of the places that i read about here eg epicurian food hall and kilkenny centre. these are only for snacks of course. If i am up for a longer stay i intend to go back to the lemongrass restaurant in maynooth (glenroyal hotel) and i want to try the bewleys hotel in ballsbridge which i read about here and of course pregos in lucan. good luck with it.

What works for me.

I find that abstaining from food for several hours and drinking a lot of coffee and water often works for me (I also spend a bit of time hovering over the toilet trying to gently persuade the culpable foodstuffs to take their leave). After several hours i find that eating a meal restores my vitality but i would normally stay away from processed gf alternatives and dairy and go for meat, veg or fruit instead. This may sound somewhat strange but i sometimes find gently 'massaging' my abdomen helps to coax out and gluten-carrying invaders. Then i flagellate myself and swear to be more careful from here on in. Which is hard, i know, lately i've become extremely gluten paranoid to the point where i will barely eat anywhere and i've become haughtily disdainful of ignorant restaurants and waiting staff.
