Is a Nutritionist Helpful?
Interested to know if anyone has views on seeing a nutritionist/dietition (what's the difference?!) Is it worth seeing one and if so, what can you expect them to tell you/advise you or help you with. My daughter has just been diagnosed, and wondering if it's a good idea or not. She's had all the blood tests and we're still waiting to see a gastro.
when i was diagnosed as coeliac i was automatically sent to the dietician in the hospital. She of course put me in contact with the society and she went through what i would be cutting out of my diet or substituting with something gf. It is a little help but I think keeping up to date with the society and attending meetings is the best help of all.
Hi Amanmac
I went to a dietician/nutritionist privately coz when I was diagnosed the St. Vincent's dietician service had been withdrawn! - thanks to a local TD he brought that up in the Dail and got the service re-instated, was very happy about that.
I found it absolutely brilliant. I had thought I was doing fine, and that there wouldn't be much they could tell me, but I was wrong. The dietician had a look at a week's worth of food - good to keep a weeks food diary before you go and bring it to show them. She showed me where I was eating too much of one food group and how to balance my diet. She also had recommendations about getting more calcuim in my diet etc. I thought it was well worth the money.
Best of luck

honestly, i went to a dietician and it set me back 80 euro! and she didn't tell me anything i didn't know already. I honestly believe the coeliac society is the greatest source of information on it and as for balanced diet, if you've any grasp oof the food pyramid then a dietican won't tell you anyrthing you don't already know. MOre about the food pyramid can be food using google, which is FREE!
Plus i personally think its far more empowering to search out the information yourself, the internet will tell you pretty much anything you want to know. And a dietican can tell me i should eat a, b and c but if i don't like a, b and c it just won't happen!
... perhaps i just went to a bad dietician! also i shud mention i wanted advice on how to gain weight, expecting well for you weight you'd need to be eating X amount of calories get so many from certain food groups etc! So maybe i was expecting a lot! .. or was just unlucky!
If anyone had a better experience with a dietician, i'd be really interested to know?

I've seen a Nutritionist a number of times since being diagnosed, and try to see her once a year now. I find the advice that they give really worth while and well worth the money. Either Clally you were unlucky as you said or I was very lucky!! From my experience I'd recommend a trip to a nutritionist to anyone. I went through everything with her and found that she took the time to go through everything with me until I was happy and understood what was required. I usually spend about an hour in each session and never feel that she is trying to rush me or anything like that.
Search engines are always a great source of info but I find that I need someone to actually tell me what I need to do and give me a target to reach before I go back to see them again!!
That's just my experience, hope I continue to be lucky!!...

Hey Robbie, it sounds like you struck gold. Can i be bold and ask you who you went to see and where? to be honest especially with the weight gain i think i'd benefit from having a bit of a target or something to aim for. I understand if you'd prefer not to, if its better you might send it in a private message?
Be grateful of the info, need someone to motivate me! i'm living of chocolate at the moment and it can't go on!!!
Thanks x

this is the website of the accredited body of Nutritionist in Ireland and has a useful search engine by which you can find out which dietitians are in your area and what they specialise in etc.
It is always worthwhile seeing someone when you are diagnosed as your own lifestyle/diet may require tailoring to the gluten free diet.
