Some Questions
Hi folks,
newly diagnosed so I'm still feeling my way 'round!!!
2 questions:
1. Is it ok for Coeliacs to have a few drinks? Not talking about lights out, but just a few sociable drinks. What I'm really asking is does alcohol affect your recovery? Also what drinks are ok. I know beer is out. Is cider or wine ok?
2. Is it safe to eat Ben & Jerrys Phish Food?

Welcome to the forum victor.
Firstly being a coeliac should not affect your enjoyment of life or a night out. Spirits and wines are fine, beer is out but cider is ok too. I have never suffered as adverse effects from having the odd drink though I suppose the temptation to have a burger and chips afterwards may the only weakness.
Ben & Jerry's phish food is fine, I recommend your order the coeliac handbook if you dont already have it. You'll get used to reading labels but its great to have for the things you dont purchase on a daily basis.

I was diagnosed about 3 months ago and am still feeling my way around. As mentioned here get the book as it is a bible for coeliacs...my motto has been if it's not in the book don't touch it and if it is still check the labels.
Re beer - the issue is not so much can you have a drink and not feel sick...hopefully your doctor would have told you that each time you ingest gluten you are damaging your body...so for me it makes it a no brainer not to touch it.
Also from the sounds of your beans incident you are probably fairly sensitive so will suffer from any gluten.

Victor,
Cider and any short or wine is suitable for the GF diet. You can also buy GF beer in some off licences. I have been GF for over 8 years and have had no problems (you still get the lovely hangover after a late night)
Your best bet is to get the book from the Coeliac Sociaty, which is issued yearly, it will give you a full listing of the GF foods (it makes life very handy)
There are quite a few breakfast cereals out there, but a lot of the GF ones are high in sugar and fat! Fruit is good but I find that the Whole Earth cornflakes are good, and their is another brand I got from the Health Food Store, cant remember the name but very good. Initially cereals will taste different but you get used to them and the ones mentioned above are quite tasty.

Hi, had same problem in the beginning but if you are near any Dunnes Stores (I use The Mill Centre in Clondalkin) they have cornflakes & Kelkin porridge which is nice and they also have a good range of gluten free food. I get Glutano cornflakes in the chemist and after a while didn't notice the difference in taste. Another idea for breakfast can be eggs and if you're really hungry bacon & gluten free sausages

I find Whole Earth Corn Flakes very nice, also Kelkin do a Muesli which is not bad, I usually add mixed nuts and a Tropical Mix depending on my mood. Both these you can purchase in Tesco and Dunnes. Also Tesco Muffins are not bad if you want a change. And off course you can now get Gluten Free Sausages and do a nice fry. I hope this helps.
There's loads of cereals we can eat and loads of them are really great. Get onto ecodirect (www.ecodirect.ie) and they'll deliver next day. No matter where u live in Ireland. They got in the burger buns (yummy) and ciabata again and they're great too. Actually if u want something and cant find it they'll get if for u.

Ecodirect are good but can be more expensive on some items that can be purchased in the supermarket. Been Gluten Free is very expensive so I would be watching the price on items.
Don't forget to keep all your receipts as you can claim on your M1 form at the end of the year. Mind you, you don't get a massive amount of money back but it all helps.

I dont find Ecodirect so expensive at all. The stuff I get from them is mostly not in the supermarkets in anyways. And I don't have to go there just to find out that the stuff is not there. And a lot of it is organic and none of it has wheat in it so I'm happy to get ecodirect to deliver it the next day insted of me driving here n there looking for bits and pieces in the supermarkets. And they got me some stuff that I had seen in England. So I think we shoudl help them insted of always thinking we can be so smart shopping here and there to save a few cents buying from supermarkets that dont really care about us in the long run.
