Shopping Tips

Shopping gluten-free, particularly the first time can be very frustrating, confusing and at times depressing. Take a few steps to make it a more positive experience.

Before you go

  • Make a shopping list from the Food List.
  • Read about food labelling.
  • If you like to cook, find a gluten-free recipe that you fancy and add the ingredients to your list.
  • Go at a time when you're able to take your time.

Take with you

  • Your current Food List,
  • The person who usually does the grocery shopping if it isn’t you.

In the shop:

  • In supermarkets the manufactured gluten-free foods such as bread and pasta are often grouped together with other diet speciality foods. Take extra care that what you are buying is gluten-free, not just wheat-free or a simply a food marketed as healthy.
  • Take a good look around since other gluten-free products may also be dotted around the store, e.g. gluten-free cereals in the cereal aisle, rice cakes in the biscuit & crackers aisle.
  • Keep your receipt! You can claim tax relief for gluten-free foods.
