Medical Card

Sample of HSE medical card

Since September 2012, gluten-free food is no longer available on the Medical Card or Drug Payment Scheme due to budget cuts. The Society has been working to lobby the government in support of financial relief or support for those Coeliacs most financially vulnerable, who struggle to afford the gluten-free diet. The Society has submitted a position paper to the Joint Committee on Health of the Oireachtas and is working to engage with government on the development of a National Policy on Coeliac Disease.

Currently the only financial support for Coeliacs is tax relief. From 2014 the Diet Supplement is no longer available to new applicants, however those currently in receipt will continue to avail of this means tested support.
